Goalie Training & Skills Sessions

Weekly Skills

  NGD Skills

Our weekly skills sessions are designed to keep a player focused during the season and while in the off-season by working with the goalies throughout the year. These 50 minute sessions will be intense and instructional. Each session the goalies will be with a goalie instructor and will focus on a skill each week. Instructors will demonstrate drills for specific skill development and coach each player to insure the drills are done correctly. First at half speed to master the technique, then building into full game speed. I am firm believer that habits are created in practice and goaltending is a position that relies heavily on correct habits. Our goal is to MAXIMIZE INDIVIDUAL POTENTIAL AND DEVELOPMENT with these sessions.

Each week there will be a focus for the goalies. This allows for goalies to narrow their focus and learn to fine tune their skills. Skills will range from movement to balance, positioning to save selections, recovery to game situations. These sessions are focused on precision and repetition. There will be a 3:1 ratio of goalies to instructors when at all possible.

Private Lessons

  NGD Private Lessons

Successful goaltending demands mobility and balance. If a goalie cannot move efficiently and accurately in balance and on angle around the crease, the chance of making saves is drastically reduced. That’s why we focus on developing these, as well as all other critical tools essential to goalie position. We will cover the following but not limited to:

Balance and mobility  The coordination of hands, feet and stick is fundamental. We focus on the goaltender’s initial movement, as well as help students determine which saves are appropriate in a given situation. If young goaltenders are confident in their balance, movement and save-choice habits, they have a solid base upon which to further develop their skills.

Accuracy and efficiency in movement  In this phase we focus even more on balance of hands, feet and stick, and help students refine their save choice habits, and improve save-recovery identification. We address lateral, vertical and slant movement, as well as cover save choice and recovery for specific situations. This helps goaltenders become more athletic and less robotic in their selections because the more adaptable the goaltender is to change the greater his chance of making saves. These on-ice sessions are intense, designed to push goalies to expand their technical base and situational efficiency.

Advanced goaltending  This phase demands a high level of prior skill development. Goalies will learn even more techniques for save selection and recovery for additional shooting situations. We focus on building solid effective habits related to balance, skate position, controlling goalie space and moving with purpose. Each of these skills is used to increase focused tracking of the puck and improve shot control. Advanced save-choice habits are addressed (interior, exterior, tips and deflections, and limited view), as are game situations (gaining/stealing depth in the crease, building confidence during games and practices, and game-specific understanding).
